Situated on Great Suffolk Street, a mere 500m from the Tate Modern and all that Bankside has to offer, Conran & Partners have designed a mixed use scheme comprising 671 student bed spaces and 2230m2 of commercial space. The proposal includes two new buildings separated by a new pedestrian walkway linking Great Suffolk Street and Pocock Street.
The scheme comprises one 10 storey corner triangular building which acts as an architectural marker and another 9 storey block that recalls the warehouse character of Southwark. The design philosophy of the buildings, with three ‘pods’ that float above and the creation of a new pedestrian route, draw on the previous 18th Century use of the site and aim to reestablish the historic address ‘Moonraker Alley’ where moonraker sails were once manufactured for clipper ships. The buildings will exhibit a high architectural quality not typically found in student schemes, whilst also offering students views of Central London and the nearby Tate Modern.
The accommodation will comprise of 127 studios intended for post graduate students and 84 dual aspect cluster apartments comprising 544 student cluster rooms, all with ensuite shower rooms. Conran & Partners intend to make the scheme highly sustainable, with a minimum BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating, green roofs, water recycling and through the use of renewable energy .
A new ‘pocket park’ adds vibrancy to the scheme, providing a much needed local amenity.
