Following Conran & Partners success in an international architecture competition in 2004, construction is now underway on the first phase of the East Futako Tamagawa Regeneration Project in Tokyo. The site stretches for 1km on land adjacent to the Tamagawa river on the very edge of the city and the first phase will provide over 260,000m² of residential, retail, office and leisure buildings when it completes in late-2010. A central promenade connects the various buildings on the site from the railway station to the west through to the residential towers to the east. The design of the buildings, which all settle on a unifying stone plateau, responds to their location on this route, becoming lighter and finer in detail in progression east, representing the journey from the city to nature.
