Bridgemarket is a mixed-use development occupying the vaulted spaces in the Manhattan footings of the Queensboro (59th Street) Bridge. As part of the development, Conran & Partners designed fit-out schemes for a Conran restaurant – Guastavinos – and the Terence Conran Shop (see Interiors). As part of our appointment we were also asked to design an entrance pavilion for the basement shop unit, sitting on a landscaped plaza in front of the massive vaults of the bridge. The curved roof of the pavilion serves as a counterpoint to the suspension structure of the bridge, and is inset with glass blocks which makes for dramatic lighting effects at night.
