In 1997 we were asked to provide a new permanent berth for the Royal Yacht Britannia, with proposals envisaging the vessel moored alongside Ocean Terminal. The scheme was radically re-worked to provide a permanent Visitor Centre on the second floor of the new building, with panoramic glazing and bridge links to the upper levels of Britannia. To provide a temporary home for the Visitor Centre, a building on the adjoining quayside was erected. The single-storey 12,000sq ft pavilion was designed and built within 20 weeks, in time for the arrival of Britannia in the autumn of 1997. In her opening year, the centre attracted over 430,000 visitors – well in excess of projections.
