The landscaping of the residential quarter of Roppongi Hills, designed in association with Dan Pearson, has been inspired by the verdant English countryside, with its hedges, pastures and copses. Each area draws on an historical period, reinterpreting in a bold and contemporary way such traditional themes as the apothecary garden, vegetable garden and medieval observation mound. A flowing series of private and public gardens is connected by informal copses and linking design elements, including an undulating hedge and drystone walling. Each garden has its own mood, expressed in specific features such as giant topiary, sweeps of grasses and blades of cor-ten steel. Discreet lighting picks out sculptural elements and grazes the low walls and hedges.
