NEWS ARTICLE: Conran completes a sustainable habitat
(BD Magazine, Housing, June 07, Issue 8)
Architect Conran & Partners has completed Atalanta affordable housing development in Brighton, providing 31 one- and two-bedroom flats and a community centre for Brighton & Hove Council and Downland Housing Association.
The practice sourced materials locally for its bold Scandinavian-style building. The cladding uses highly sustainable sweet chestnut, indigenous to Sussex. Bricks are sourced from a local quarry and the corner tower is clad in recycled copper. The roof elevation is planted with sedum to soften its appearance.
Drawing a straight line from the stripped-down sixties Habitat revolution to 21st century eco-housing, director Paul Zara says Sir Terence Conran’s post-war upbringing instilled in him a hatred of wasting materials and energy.
“That ties in nicely with the eco-thinking we incorporate into our designs,” he says.
