This £6 million scheme by Conran & Partners Architects to redevelop the pier next to Cutty Sark has been approved by Greenwich council.
Three new pavilions will be built on the World Heritage Site, which is jointly owned by the Greenwich Hospital Trust and the Port of London authority. The pavilions will be built from wood and copper, echoing boat-building methods used during the 19th century, when the Cutty Sark sailed.
The project will also create a new pier and boat-ticket kiosks, and is expected to become a key river transport hub for 2012 Olympics. The new pier should be complete by the end of 2008.
