Richard trained at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and joined Conran & Partners in 1984. He became Director of Architecture in 1993, and Managing Director in 1999.
Richard was project architect for the Design Museum, which opened in 1989. Subsequently, he became project director for the Addison Wesley Longman Headquarters; a 20m new-build office building, completed at the end of 1995, at that time recognized as a leader in the field of environmental design. As a director and more recently in his position as Managing Director, he has also overseen the design and implementation of all Conran Restaurants and Conran Shop projects around the world, including Bridgemarket (comprising Guastavino's restaurant and the Terence Conran Shop in New York) and the 267-bedroom Great Eastern Hotel in London.
Richard led our Japanese projects, mainly for the Mori Building Company in Tokyo. These include Roppongi Hills, an 11-hectare urban regeneration project, where our work comprises two 44-storey residential towers, an 18-storey serviced apartment tower, a 15-storey mixed-use building, a health spa and the 5,000 sq m Roppongi Hills dining club on the 51st floor of the Mori Roppongi office tower. Other Japanese projects include Niki Club East, a resort hotel in Nasu, and Conran Shops in Tokyo and Fukuoka.
As Managing Director, Richard is also responsible for finance and operations across all areas of the business, including architecture, interiors, product and graphic design.
