Roppongi Hills

Roppongi Hills is a new urban quarter in the heart of Tokyo, created by the Mori Building Company, the city's largest private developer. The scheme, which occupies an 11-hectare site, is as significant to Tokyo as Canary Wharf is to London, but is located right in the city centre, an area known for its restaurants, bars and nightlife.

Appointed in 1997 as part of an international design team, Conran & Partners have been involved in the project's architecture, interior design, landscape design, product and graphics. It is a clear demonstration of our dedication to holistic design.

Providing some 800,000 sq m of office, residential and retail space, as well as a hotel, cinema and new broadcasting headquarters for TV Asahi, Roppongi Hills is a mixed-use development on a scale rarely explored in the heart of a world city. The bold regeneration plan for the area was instigated in 1986 by Minoru Mori, President and CEO of Mori Building Company. After a 36-month fast-track construction period, Roppongi Hills opened in April 2003.

For Conran & Partners, undertaking a project of this scale far from the UK meant coordinating our efforts with Mori, other international designers and local implementation teams, a process which demanded a high degree of cooperation and communication, to achieve not only a shared vision, but also a high standard of construction and detailing.

Conran & Partners designed significant parts of the mixed-use scheme, including:

  • two 44-storey residential towers (Residence B and Residence C)
  • an 18-storey serviced apartment tower (Residence D)
  • a 15-storey retail, office and apartment building (Roppongi Hills Gate Tower)
  • the 5,000 sq m Roppongi Hills Club
  • the 1,900 sq m Roppongi Hills Spa
  • the landscaping of the 2.25-hectare residential quarter, in association with UK landscape designer Dan Pearson

“'Conran & Partners’ sensitivity toward colours and materials, and the way their designs capture the essence of our project concept, has exceeded my expectations. They have made a significant contribution to the success of Roppongi Hills.”
