A building that pioneered environmentally friendly workplace design in Britain, the Longman headquarters provides 16,000 sq m of office space arranged around three atria. The thermal mass of the concrete structure assists in cooling. Windows are openable at high and low levels, and natural ventilation is further promoted by the atria, which draw warm air out through roof vents. External louvres reduce heat gain in summer while allowing low sunlight in to warm interiors in winter. In 1993 the building was assessed under the BREEAM energy scheme, achieving 20 out of a possible 21 credits, a rating unequalled at the time.
“If low-energy office designs are to make a significant impact, they must be affordable and adaptable enough to meet the changing needs of different organizations. This building is certainly a step in the right direction.”
