Located in the Smithfield conservation area of Manchester city centre, this stunning new building comprises ground-floor retail and restaurant space with seven storeys of high-quality residential apartments above. All of the apartments have balconies or terraces, and are flexibly planned, with oak sliding screens separating living areas from bedrooms permitting different spatial uses. Full height glazing lights all rooms. At first-floor level there is a landscaped south- and west-facing roof terrace.
The palette of materials used externally—a shimmering blue-grey terracotta, patinated zinc, and extensive glazing—both reflect the character of the conservation area and add an element of vitality, shifting subtly in appearance according to light and weather conditions.
The basic form of the building consists of two interlocking volumes, expressed in different materials, sitting on a single-storey plinth, which, in turn, is supported by circular columns.
