Bridgemarket is a mixed-use development occupying the vaulted spaces in the Manhattan footings of the Queensboro (59th Street) Bridge. As part of the development, Conran & Partners designed fit-out schemes for a Conran restaurant Guastavinos and the Terence Conran Shop (see Interiors). As part of our appointment we were also asked to design an entrance pavilion for the basement shop unit, sitting on a landscaped plaza in front of the massive vaults of the bridge. The curved roof of the pavilion serves as a counterpoint to the suspension structure of the bridge, and is inset with glass blocks which makes for dramatic lighting effects at night.
