Roppongi Hills Spa

Conran & Partners’ second spa project for the Mori Building Company is located in the three lower floors of Residence C, a 44-storey apartment building also designed by Conran & Partners as part of Mori’s 11-hectare Roppongi Hills development, in Tokyo . The 1,900sqm facility includes a swimming pool, saunas, hot tubs, massage and treatment rooms, a studio, gym and restaurant.

The spa has been designed as a haven away from the noise and pollution of Tokyo ; a relaxing, revitalizing microclimate. Simplified to its essential elements, it has been conceived as a journey through preparatory areas, to places of restoration. These areas are separated by a threshold wall of rough-textured black slate, accentuated by a thin line of vibrant blue light. Distinct palettes of materials used either side of this divide assist orientation.

The 'preparatory' side of the Spa’s contains the main reception, lounge, and dining area. The lockers, showers, and changing areas on this side help visitors to unwind in readiness for the restoration process ahead. The palette chosen for the ‘preparatory’ side is restrained, providing a suitable backdrop for occasional accents such as bitter-lemon inter-layered glazing, along with large-scale waterscape graphics.

The ‘restorative’ side has been designed to enhance purification, stimulation, meditation and rejuvenation, incorporating whirlpool baths, plunge pools, a swimming pool and treatment rooms. Materials on the ‘restorative’ side belong to a more vibrant palette. Richly coloured spaces, such as the treatment rooms, provide an atmospheric and stimulating backdrop for the activities within.
