Appointed in 2001 by the Royal Institute of British Architects, our brief was to create a simple and flexible cafe, exhibition and function space within the refurbished Florence Hall on the first floor of the Institute's listed HQ building. The solution centred on a series of large semi-circular banquettes on wheels, which can be moved quickly to divide or open up the space for its different uses. A series of oversized standard lamps reflect the scale of the Hall while providing a warm domestic glow at a human level.
