Shop Floor < 01 >
Marylebone

Completing their work on the redevelopment of a former stable building on Marylebone High Street (see Architecture), Conran & Partners designed and supervised the fitting-out of the new concrete-framed building as a second London Conran Shop and a new Conran Restaurant – the elegant Orrery.

The shop occupies three trading levels. The ground floor is arranged as series of informal ‘room sets’ and a chair display, with lighting and ‘under-glass’ (gifts) at first floor. These first two levels are dominated by the sculptural vaulted soffits of the pre-cast floor units, each equipped with an aerofoil-section lighting ‘boom’ formed in GRC. The airy second floor – a steel- framed penthouse opening onto a large paved roof terrace – accommodates the kitchenware and garden furniture collections. The three sales floors are connected by a spectacular glazed lift and stair, lit from above by a large roof-light.

Orrery restaurant occupies the first floor street frontage, enjoying views across Marylebone High Street into the churchyard beyond, through a series of arched window openings. Moving plywood aerofoil louvred screens and etched glass panels are used to create intimacy in the long gallery-like space.
