The Terence Conran Shop in New York forms part of Bridgemarket, a mixed-use development occupying the vaulted spaces in the Manhattan footings of the Queensboro (59th Street) Bridge. At street level, an elegant glazed pavilion designed by Conran & Partners sits on a plaza in front of the bridge, acting as a showcase for the best in contemporary furniture and home-ware. Its swooping roof echoes the curve of the bridge beyond.
The steel-framed building is entered through a glazed vestibule into a top-lit gallery. A solid stone-clad lift-shaft leads down to the main trading floor located beneath the bridge. This space is characterized by the heroic concrete footings of the structure above. These were excavated to create the under-croft, with the rugged quality of the columns emphasizing the ‘archaeological’ nature of the space. Around these rough-hewn elements sit sleek timber and zinc-clad display fixtures, within an otherwise white-modernist space.
