Walthamstow Stadium

L&QWalthamstow, London, Current

Conran’s architects are redeveloping Walthamstow Stadium for London & Quadrant (L&Q). The designs, which were approved in November 2012, play a key role in helping tackle the area’s housing shortage while also preserving the site’s historic listed buildings.

The homes built would be a balanced mix of private, intermediate and affordable housing, constructed to high environmental sustainability standards.

Conran won the contract in open competition. The award-winning practice has designed and seen built innovative housing schemes throughout the UK and is particularly experienced at delivering high quality affordable housing the public wants to buy, rent and live in – most recently the Green Man Lane scheme in Ealing.

The £50 million Walthamstow development, which will commence next near, will create up to 250 jobs, and 294 homes for local people, including social housing provision. It will also secure a future for the greyhound stadium’s historic listed buildings; the stadium has lain disused for many years.

A new leisure centre will offer an extensive range of sporting activities, and will be run by a community sports trust. A nursery will provide 80 places for local children, and there will be a café and a crèche. Parkland, play spaces a public plaza and allotments are also included in the Conran design.

The development will also provide more than £4 million in contributions to local education, health, leisure and highways improvements.
